Mrs. Desper’s Advanced Textile class has been doing fiber identification. We have been doing tests with burning, sodium hydroxide, and acetone. We want to see how each fiber reacts under these conditions. The information that we gather may tell us how to care for the fiber and how to use the fiber. It will also tell us about some of the properties of the fiber. We have also been looking at fibers under the microscope. This will give us a better understanding of how the fiber and fabric is constructed. Once we have collected all our data, we will compare our results and make conclusions. Each student will then be given an unknown sample of fabric. They will then conduct their own experiments and see if they can identify the fibers that make up their fabric sample.
We are also excited that the international fabric company, MODA Fabrics from located in Dallas, Texas is contributing supplies and educational materials for the Adv. Textiles Class. This experience will open channels with the fabric industry educating the students about the opportunities available. There are many opportunities for people within this industry, from sales to designing. This is a wonderful experience for our students.
